"Get Moo-ving with Milk" Poster Contest Showcases Milk Benefits
On Tuesday, November 8, winners were chosen from all the "Get Moo-ving with Milk" posters created by students at the Alma Middle School. Under the guidance of Mrs. Diane Zakala, Art Teacher for Alma Middle School, each student was given the opportunity to create a poster conveying the message of the $5000 grant awarded to Alma Middle School by United Dairy Industry of Michigan (UDIM) and National Dairy Council (NDC)- that is, to encourage students to increase their consumption of healthful dairy products and increase their physical activity level.

All supplies were provided through the grant. The panel of judges was compiled of parents, school employees, community members, representatives of local businesses, and a Board of Education member.

Judging criteria included:
Promotion of the theme of the grant
Success in conveying the message
Originality in expression of the theme
Neatness/craftsmanship
Suitability as a representation of the school to the community

Each classroom selected their top four posters to move on to the next level of competition. A winner from each grade level was selected from these entries and their pictures are attached to this email. They are:
Vernon Moeggenborg, 7th grade
Ashlee Fish, 6th grade
Meredith Baadte, 8th grade
Miss Fish was judged the overall, school-wide winner of the contest.
In addition to the "got milk?" poster and "got milk?" insulated lunch box that each of these three students won, Ashlee also received a "got milk?" AM/FM radio.

Ashlee's entire classroom will be treated to an ice cream sundae party on Monday, November 14, compliments of UDIM and NDC.

Alma Public Schools Awarded 2005 Nutrition Education Grant

United Dairy Industry of Michigan is pleased to announce that Alma Public Schools is the recipient of the 2005 Michigan 3-A-Day of Dairy Nutrition Education Grant.  Martha Powelson, Food Service Director with Alma Public Schools, developed the winning program, “Get Mooving With Milk”.   Ms. Powelson will serve as project director for the program and Mrs. Carolyn Studley, Principal, will facilitate implementation of the program in the Alma Middle School.

“Get Mooving With Milk”, which will reach 594 middle school students, includes a variety of activities designed to increase awareness of the benefits of physical activity and healthy eating, including enjoying at least three servings of milk, cheese, or yogurt each day.  Students will create their own dairy foods campaign incorporating age-appropriate health and nutrition information from local health professionals.  The student campaign will involve the creation of posters, classroom contests and competitions (e.g. collecting milk jug rings and grocery receipts), taste-tests, food preference surveys, and development and publication of recipes and songs in the school newspaper, “Middle School MOOS”.  Families are encouraged to participate in and support program activities.

This year, United Dairy Industry of Michigan received 10 grant applications outlining creative initiatives empowering kids to become advocates for healthy eating, an active lifestyle and a healthy weight.  Thanks to all grant applicants for their dedication to help improve children’s eating habits and increase active play.  The grant applications were evaluated by a panel of judges including representatives from the Michigan Department of Community Health, Michigan Department of Education, and the Michigan Dietetic Association.

The 3-A-Day of Dairy Nutrition Education Grant program was developed by National Dairy Council to help children adopt an active lifestyle and develop positive eating behaviors to improve their overall diet.  Michigan offers one $5,000 grant yearly.  The grant recipients from each state/region are featured on National Dairy Council’s web site, www.nationaldairycouncil.org. Be sure to visit National Dairy Council’s web site in early 2006 for information about next year's grant program.
