Good Nutrition for Back-to-School
as Easy as 1-2- 3-A-Day
of Dairy

Give Your Kids a Healthy Start to the School Year and
Help Them Get the Dairy Their Growing Bodies Need

Start Smart
Make breakfast matter and start the day off right by including dairy in the first meal of the day.

*   Blend strawberry milk with fresh banana slices for a fruity morning splash.

*   Sprinkle reduced-fat Cheddar cheese on scrambled eggs.

*   Layer granola, fresh fruit and raspberry or vanilla yogurt for a yummy breakfast parfait.

Lunch Munch
For a lunch that makes the grade, encourage your child to select nutrient-rich foods like
low-fat and fat-free milk, cheese or yogurt, whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

*   Pizza, tacos or salad sprinkled with shredded cheese from the lunch line are
nutritious choices that are sure to be a favorite with your kids!

*   Encourage your child to pick up his/her favorite flavor of low-fat yogurt in the school cafeteria.

*   To increase the chances that your child will enjoy school milk with lunch, ask your school
nutrition director about getting low-fat flavored milk in plastic bottles in your school.
Visit 3aday.org for more info.

Cool After School
Smart snacking can help round out kids’ daily nutritional requirements and help ensure they’re getting their
3-A-Day of Dairy.  Have these healthier snacks pre-prepared and available to make it easy for kids to
reach for a cool, satisfying treat after school:

*   Create fruit-and-cheese kabobs by alternating slices of apple and reduced-fat cheese
cubes on small wooden skewers.

*   Have them “chill out” before homework by serving popsicles made of a frozen blend
of low-fat strawberry milk and fresh strawberry slices.

*   Let them take a dip and get a serving of dairy by dunking cut up vegetables in
melted cheese or fruit slices in low-fat yogurt.

Dinner with Dairy
Regular family mealtime is an opportunity to share thoughts and ideas, unwind and make connections.
By eating with your children, it’s also more likely that they will eat healthier, balanced meals that
reflect the recommended Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

*   Sprinkle dinnertime favorites, like soup or a baked potato, with your favorite
shredded cheese for added flavor.

*   Make a habit of serving a glass of low-fat or fat-free milk with dinner.
Consider options like low-fat chocolate or strawberry milk too.

*   For a sweet ending to a long day, top angel food cake with low-fat cherry or vanilla yogurt.
