Meet the Registered Dietitians at UDIM
Karen Giles-Smith, M.S., R.D.
Karen Giles-Smith, registered dietitian, is manager of nutrition communications for Dairy Council of Michigan/United Dairy Industry of Michigan (UDIM) where she provides health professionals, the media and consumers with current information on nutrition and health. She serves as a media spokesperson on a variety of issues including child nutrition, dental health, lactose intolerance, and osteoporosis prevention.
Karen is active in the state and local district dietetic associations, serving as the annual conference co-chair for the Michigan Dietetic Association and as President of the Lansing Dietetic Association. She received the 2004 Michigan Registered Dietitian of the Year Award and the 2008 Public Relations Individual Award from the Michigan Dietetic Association.
Karen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science and Nutrition from Marygrove College and a Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition from Case Western Reserve University. Prior to joining UDIM, Karen was a clinical dietitian at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.
Lois McBean, M.S., R.D.
Lois McBean, Registered Dietitian, is Nutrition Technical Advisor for Dairy Council of Michigan/United Dairy Industry of Michigan (UDIM). In this position, Lois monitors and critically evaluates the scientific literature as it relates to the health benefits of dairy foods; writes and edits UDIM’s Nutrition Reports newsletter; and answers technical inquires related to the nutrition and health benefits of dairy foods. Lois is an active member of the American Dietetic Association, The American Society for Nutrition, and the Institute of Food Technologists. Also, as a consultant to National Dairy Council (NDC), Lois writes and edits the Dairy Council Digest, is co-author of the Handbook of Dairy Foods and Nutrition (CRC Press), and author of numerous articles and materials for health professionals. She is a recipient of several Awards for Publication Excellence (APEX). Lois holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada and a Master of Science degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Prior to joining UDIM, Lois worked in nutrition research for NDC in Chicago and for the Federal government in Washington, DC.
